LUNAR: Astronaut

So for the past couple of days I've been doing some astronaut sketches for my Lunar project, and yesterday I put together this one as a kind of simplified version of the Apollo 11 Space Suit. It's not really a finished piece as I still need to do a bit of work on it conspiracy-wise, possibly something with the visor reflections, so I'll do that at a later date. This is it for now...

Marius Roosendaal - MSCED

I recently saw some work by designer Marius Roosendaal, for a project he's been working on called 'Make Something Cool Everyday' (MSCAD). This is how he describes the project:

"Throughout 2011 I will do something creative each day.
In most cases this will be some piece of graphic design on a
subject that stirs my interests,
or simply based on a photograph I've made or found."

I've heard of designers doing similar projects before, but what I really loved about his project is the type of stuff he was creating. Although primarily graphic design, I really love his use of colour, shape and pattern in some instances. His pieces are very graphic with strong line and shape, and make me think a bit of old fashioned sci-fi book covers, especially as some have a nice old paper quality to them, as well as strong typography. I've posted a few of his pieces below for you to get your peepers on. I think these kind of link in with my Lunar project, in the sense that they do have a sci-fi, futuristic/science look about them, and some actually feature astronauts, planets etc.
Remember to check out his site here, and his MSCAD site here. Enjoy.

Gavin Potenza

I came across the website of illustrator and designer Gavin Potenza a while back and really loved his work. He's based in New York and works freelance, creating illustrations, infographics and maps; as well as co-running design studio Script and Seal.
I really love his bold illustrations, with confident use of colour and some nice geometric qualities with the use of circles and lines etc. He also uses some subtle texture throughout which I really like and try to use in my own work; it gives it a slight hand-made, printed quality rather than a digital one. I'm not sure exactly how he makes his images but they seem like maybe a mix of digital and hand-made in some instances.
Anyway, I've posted some if his work below, a variety of illustrations and some really cool and imaginative infographics, and don't forget to check out his website here. Enjoy.

www.astronautsuicides.com

Just found out about this website via OK Great and thought I'd share it also, just as it kind of links with my Lunar project. An interesting little project with some really nice photography, if obviously slightly macabre, based around the fact that the NASA space program has significantly slowed down in recent years.
The photographs are really well done, and I don't know where they got the astronaut suit from but it looks really good, especially the helmet as it gives a nice flash of gold to the more monotone environments. I've posted a couple of the images below, and check out the website here for the whole set. Enjoy.

LOVE. Creative Placement

So, back at the start of June, I spent a month at the LOVE. Creative studio in Manchester doing a work placement, along with 3 other students from uni; Helen Porter, Jack Maguire and Tom Mathieson. It was really good of them to allow us some space in the studio, and it was really cool being right in the centre of Manchester.

Whilst I can't talk about any of the exciting projects they were working on whilst we were there, I can say that everyone there was really nice, and we were able to help out with a bit of research and some photo taking now and then. We were able to dedicate time to working on our own projects which was good, and speaking for myself, I don't think I've ever spent 9 til 5 working solely on one project or piece of work, so it was good to have the opportunity to work like that with no distractions.

Whilst I was there I did a bit of research for both my dissertation and personal project, worked on an image for the Lett's diary competition (which wasn't so good), sorted out some stuff for my blog, worked on a version of the LOVE. logo, sorted a pdf portfolio and got some help from Tom and Jack with my 8x8 animation, which I blogged about recently.

This is the LOVE. logo that Steve asked me to have a go at. The logo itself, the bold type, is their actual logo, so I had a go at adding some colour and decoration to it. I tried to keep it bold, and had a bit of a play around. I wasn't really sure what to draw for it, so I ended with a kind of retro, pinball machine theme.

I really enjoyed going with the other students as it was really cool to see what they were getting up to and the sort of things they were doing on the other pathways!
I've posted some photos below of us all in the studio, courtesy of Jack. Also a picture of us all as bakewell tarts, and next to giant farmer.....who knows where they came from....
There's also a photo of the face cake we got for the guys there on the last day, which they blogged about here, so go check it out!
So thanks to Steve and everyone at LOVE. for letting us spend a month there and see what they were up to! And to Tom, Jack and Helen for making it so much fun!

LUNAR: Where's the dust?

Apparently one of the reasons the moon landings never happened was because there was no dust created when the LEM was landing or taking off....so I added some in to put their mind's at ease.

LUNAR: Deploy

So here's a little piece of work I did a couple of weeks ago, showing the LEM deployment for my moon landing and hoax claims project. I was just playing around with trying to simplify elements down to basic shapes and create a kind of diagram of what happened....or didn't happen.....I'll leave that upto you...
